Walking with the Masai is a very different experience. Walk with local Masai along trails, learning about their customs, culture and the African bush. This area, in the Loita Hills, is beautiful and offers amazing views over the Great Rift Valley. Each day you will walk for between 4-6 hours, giving you the chance to acclimatise to altitude, as well as allowing a more leisurely pace for you to observe and enjoy the different eco-systems and habitats. Consequently, this experience is best enjoyed reasonably fit.
Today, you will be met by the Masai team and will head south by road from Nairobi, towards the Kenyan and Tanzanian border, and onto your first camp. Overnight at JAN'S CAMP.
Duration of walk 4 – 5 hrs
Difficulty level: Gentle – steep slopes
Today you will head out on the trail, with a stop at the viewpoint, a great spot to see the full length of the trail laid out ahead and to catch a first glimpse of the Rift Valley. A leisurely walk takes you to the Ossasinai River, where your first trail camp, is located, deep in the forest in a valley surrounded by trees, near the river. Overnight at OSSASINAI CAMP. (AI)
Day 3Olmelil Ridge
Duration of walk 6 hrs
Difficulty level: Steep – gentle climbs
This morning you will depart camp and head south walking over two ridges to the Olmelil Ridge near Tianmnangen. The thick forest changes to open glades and waterholes with impressive rock formations on the Olmelil ridge. The campsite is on a spectacular site overlooking the Great Rift Valley. Duration of walk 6 hrs Difficulty level: Steep descent followed by a gentle climb
Early this morning you will have the opportunity to watch the sunrise over the Rift Valley. After a steep descent from the escarpment, you will reach the next camp, deep in a forested valley not far from Mausa. With hot showers and home-cooked food waiting for you at camp, you can settle into the evening in absolute comfort. Overnight at MASUA CAMP. (AI)
Day 5Ol Chorro Nairbor
Duration of walk 6 hrs Difficulty level: Gentle walk over rolling hills
Today, you will enjoy a picturesque walk along the Rift Valley while heading further south to reach Chorro Nairbor, a beautiful spring where the Masai frequently bring their cattle, when using the escarpment trail into the Rift Valley. After a picnic lunch along the trail, you will head to your next camp. Overnight at OL CHORRO NAIRBOR CAMP. (AI)
Day 6Ol Chorro Nairbor – Nairobi
Today, you will descend into the Rift Valley, getting closer to the spectacular Lake Natron. Shompole Mountain lies just north of the lake and it is possible to see the distinct crater shape of Donyo Lengai (the Mountain of God), a volcano just south of the lake, which is still active. The descent to Pakaasi Village takes about 3 - 4 hours and, on arrival you will be driven back to Nairobi.
