Best of Amritsar and Himachal

Overview

This tour starts in Delhi, then heads to the Holy City of Amritsar, home of the Golden Temple, that has more visitors than the Taj Mahal. The tour continues to Palampur, the tea capital of India as well as Dharamshala, with its Buddhist temples and monasteries. The tour then continues on through the foothills of the Himalayas to Shimla – the summer capital of “British India” – before heading back to Delhi.

Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVE DELHI
On arrival at Delhi airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel by private vehicle. Overnight at your HOTEL.

DAY 2: DELHI
After breakfast, you will be taken on a tour of Old and New Delhi. You will visit the Red Fort and visit Jama Masjid – the largest mosque in India. Enjoy a cycle ricksaw ride through the streets of Chandni Chowk. You will also have the opportunity to explore the Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb. Overnight at your HOTEL. (B)

DAY 3: DELHI – AMRITSAR
This morning you will board a train to Armritsar, the spiritual centre of the Sikh religion. Overnight at your HOTEL. (B)

DAY 4: AMRITSAR
After breakfast, you will be taken on a tour of Armritsar city at the Golden Temple. The temple was built in 1574 and has great spiritual meaning for Sikh believers. Afterwards, you will visit Jallianwala Bagh. Later this afternoon, you will see the “Beating Retreat border ceremony” at the India-Pakistan border at Attari-Wagah. Overnight at your HOTEL. (B)

DAY 5: AMRITSAR – DHARAMSHALA
Today you will be driven to Dharamshala. In the afternoon you will visit McLeod Ganj and the Dalai Lama complex which contains the Dalai Lama’s residence, a monastery, a temple and stupas. Overnight at your HOTEL. (B)

DAY 6: DHARAMSHALA – PALAMPUR – DHARAMSHALA
Today you will visit the Tea Gardens in Palampur, known as the tea capital of India, before heading to Bir and Billing, both great places for paragliding. Visit the Baijnath Temple on arrival in Dharamshala. Overnight at your HOTEL. (B)

DAY 7: DHARAMSHALA – SHIMLA
Today you will be driven to Shimla, where the rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight at your HOTEL. (B)

DAYS 8: SHIMLA
Today you will visit one of Shimla’s major landmarks – the Christ Church, built between 1846 and 1857. Continue on to Scandal Point and the Himalayan Aviary. Enjoy a two hour ride on the famous Toy Train – the Himalayan Queen before a visit to Observatory Hill, also known as ‘Rashtrapati Niwas’. Overnight at your HOTEL. (B)

DAYS 9: SHIMLA
Today you will have the opportunity to explore Shimla or spend the day at leisure. Overnight at your HOTEL. (B)

DAY 10: SHIMLA – CHANDIGARH – DELHI
After breakfast, you will be transferred by road to Chandigarh railway station to board your train to Delhi. (B)
